Ivory Maple / Guatambu

Ivory Maple / Guatambu                      Pronounced:  gua-tam-bU
(Balfourodendron riedelianum)

Appearance
White to light yellow when freshly cut, this wood darkens slowly with age to a rich, deep golden color resembling maple. The grain of this popular wood is evenly colored, fine and smooth with almost no visible growth rings.

Other common names
South American Maple, Pau Marfim, Ivory wood.

Specifications
Unfinished and Prefinished 3 1/4" x 3/4" solid hardwood flooring.
No stains used.

Lengths
An average length of 31" to 37" is common with lengths ranging from 12" to 84".

Color change over time
Exposure to light does not change the color of this floor much, though it does become slightly darker over the years.

Finish
This wood works well with most of the commonly used flooring finishes.  Oil-based finishes add yellow which some people do not like on light colored wood, so it might be better to go with a water-based finish to maintain the natural light color of this wood.  Refer to NOFMA and NWFA indications on finishing for more information on finishing exotic hardwoods.
