Gingerwood / Tatajyvá

Gingerwood / Tatajyvá      Pronounced:  ta-ta-jy-vA
(Chlorophora tinctoria)

Appearance
This wood has a straight grain with growth rings that are barely visible.  Starting off bright yellow this wood changes to a deep golden brown within a few weeks to months.

Other common names
Tatajiva, Old Fustic, Barossa, Moral, Palo de mora, Dinde, Palo amarillo, Mora, Insira, Amarillo, Taiuva, Amarello, Tatayiva-saiyu

Specifications
Unfinished and prefinished 3 1/4" x 3/4" solid hardwood flooring.
No stains used.

Lengths
An average length of about 36" is common with lengths ranging from 12" to 84".

Color change over time
There is a significant change in color from the freshly sanded and finished wood to the matured floor.  When fresh, this wood is very yellow and light in color.  Within a few weeks to months it will mature to an overall deep golden brown.

Finishing
This wood is easy to finish and does not require any special treatment.  Water-based finishes are not recommended as they do not create the rich color which this floor will turn with an oil-based finish.  If a lighter floor is desired then water-based should be used but the character of the wood will not be as evident.

This picture shows a prefinished Gingerwood floor.  At the time this photo was taken the flooring was newly installed.  It will still darken over the next few months. - WTM Exotic Hardwood Flooring

This photo was taken the day after this floor was sanded and finished.  Note that it is still very light yellow.  It will darken significantly in a few months.  -  Decorative Flooring

These are 4" Gingerwood boards. This floor was not fully cured at the time this photo was taken as it still showed mainly light yellow tones. Over time it will become darker until it is an overall golden brown.

This Gingerwood floor was finished with a water-based finish one year prior to this photo being taken.  It shows none of the deep, rich colors that make this wood so striking.  Any oil-based finish would have brought those tones out in this floor.
